the Edge Center for the Arts

2010 Juried Show
Call for Entry

"Art on the Edge"

Deadline for Entering: May 7, 2010

"Art on the Edge: Sixth Annual Juried Art Exhibition" is a juried exhibit at the Edge Center Gallery in Bigfork, which means that artists enter images of three of their best works of art to be considered by the juror for the exhibit. Many experienced artists are familiar with this process, but others have not taken this step of comparison with other artists. The juror decides which of the works of art are chosen. The juror is an experienced artist who has a strong education in the arts, and because of teaching or curating in a museum or gallery has had the opportunity to evaluate many different art styles and skill levels. Every juror makes educated personal choices but these choices are based on similar criteria. Originality (no reproductions or copies), creativity, composition, meaning and skill are the qualities that the juror considers. The juror is solely responsible for which work is accepted for the exhibit and which work wins the Awards. The juror's decisions are final.

The juror for this year's "Art on the Edge" is Keith Williams, Art Department Chair and Professor at Concordia University, St. Paul. He has been an artist and educator since the late 70s. He holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, and has exhibited in local, regional, and national exhibits. He has a broad educational background including in-depth studies in studio art, art education and art history. His artistic output ranges widely from functional pottery, to expressionist drawing to liturgical furniture.

After many years of creating, teaching and observing an extensive variety of visual art forms, Keith Williams has formulated the things he looks for when judging art. He explained the criteria he uses:

  • A creative and unique approach to the work; does it present the viewer with something new and fresh.
  • Successful visual communication of the idea or concept; how successful is the artist at doing what they set out to do?
  • Level of craft appropriate to the concept; sometimes great craft can make the viewer focus on skill, thus losing the message.
  • The art world is full of great eyes. I want the art to communicate something about the artist.

"Art on the Edge: Sixth Annual Juried Exhibition" is open to all visual art media including Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, Ceramics, Glass, Textiles, Jewelry, Photography, Graphic Design, Woodworking, Printmaking and Mixed Media. The work must all be original, created in 2008, 2009 or 2010 and never shown before in the Edge Center Gallery. This exhibit is not restricted geographically.

Entering artists may send up to 3 images on CD-Rom (jpeg), an entry form, an artist's statement (about 50 words) for the catalog, and a $20 entry fee to Edge Center Gallery, Box 304, Bigfork, MN 56628 by May 7, 2010. Artwork must be delivered to the Gallery by June 28, 2010 and picked up on July 31, August 1 or 2.

"Art on the Edge" will be July 1 through July 31, 2010 with the Artists' Reception and Awards on Friday, July 2.
